Criminalizing Compassion?: The Anita Krajnc Case
What: Anita Krajnc was charged with criminal mischief for feeding water to pigs on their way to slaughter. She and her lawyers, James Silver and Gary Grill, will be speaking at Osgoode about her case and its implications for animals and activists.

Animal Law Networking Night
What: Come meet some of Toronto's lawyers working on animal issues in varying capacities. This event is co-hosted with the University of Toronto's SALDF Chapter.

Halloween Film Screening: Earthlings
What: In anticipation of Halloween, we'll screen one of the goriest, most terrifying films ever made. And most terrifying of all, it's 100% real.
When: Monday, Oct. 26th @ 12:30-2:30pm in room 2001.
Leafletting
What: SALDF members will hand out flyers about animal welfare and vegetarianism around the York campus. Come help spread awareness! If you're interested in attending, please email Ali Pester at [email protected].

What: At our first general meeting of the year, we will be discussing events and ideas for the school year. We will also be announcing our 1L rep at the General Meeting on Monday. If you're interested in the position please send a brief (300 word max) blurb about your interests and experiences with animal welfare by Sunday, September 13th at 5 pm at [email protected].

What: We'll be organizing a trip down to this year's festival. We'll walk over as group, but everyone is free to explore! It's a great opportunity to try some amazing vegetarian/vegan food, check out some workshops, and learn more about the scene in Toronto. Click here for more information.
When: Saturday, Sept. 12th @ 1pm. We'll meet at the southeast corner of Front St. and York. St. (just outside Union Station, by the silvery tipi-like statue).

What: Come visit the SALDF table at this year's Social Justice Social -- a networking and clubs event for all the social justice groups at Osgoode. It's a great opportunity to sign up to the SALDF email list, meet some of the Executive, and find out more about what SALDF has planned for the year.
When: Wednesday, Sept. 2nd @ 2:30-4:30pm in the ADR (the large windowless room on the main floor).
Orientation Week Clubs Fair Information Session
What: Come visit the SALDF table at this year's clubs fair! It's a(nother) great opportunity to sign up to the SALDF email list, meet some of the Executive, and find out more about what SALDF has planned for the year.

Toronto Veggie Pride Parade
What: Come march with Osgoode SALDF at the 6th annual Toronto Veggie Pride Parade! We'll be carrying our banner along with some of the other animal law groups (like Animal Justice and the OBA Animal Law Section).
When: Sunday, May 31st @ 1pm at Christie Pits Park. We'll be marching across Bloor and down Spadina to Kensington Market. Please email us to RSVP.
General Meeting
What: Our final event of the year. We'll be meeting to vote for the 2015-16 Executive, to take a photo for the yearbook, and to discuss any ideas and suggestions for next year.
When: Wednesday, April 8th @ 12:30pm. It will take place in the JCR (which means there will be beer!). It should only take about 30 minutes.
Networking Dinner
What: Our main networking event of the year! We'll be going out to dinner with some animal lawyers and professors, as well as some of the people from UofT SALDF. Confirmed guests so far include Prof. Lesli Bisgould (the first animal lawyer in Canada, and author of the Irwin textbook on animal law) and Camille Labchuk (the Director of Legal Advocacy at Animal Justice).
When: Thursday, March 5th @ 6pm, at Grasslands (an amazing vegan restaurant at Bathurst and Queen).
If you'd like to attend, please RSVP by sending us an email. As we've made a reservation, we will only be able to accommodate the first 8-10 people that RSVP.
Leafletting at York
What: We'll be handing out materials from Vegan Outreach, Mercy for Animals, and Animal Legal Defense Fund to York students to get them thinking about the impact of their diets on animals, the environment, and their health. You do NOT need to be veg to help out with this. If nothing else, we at least want people thinking about the amount of animals they are consuming.
Why: Leafletting can seem scary at first, but it can actually be a lot of fun! (Especially when you do it with a group!) And research on leafletting suggests that for every two leaflets you hand out, one animal will be spared a lifetime of misery.
When: Wednesday, Feb. 25th. We will meet at Osgoode at 8am and move to a busier part of York's campus and leaflet until approximately 10:30am.

Animal Sanctuary Visit
What: We'll be making the trip Cedar Row Farm Sanctuary, near Stratford. This is an amazing organization that has rescued hundreds of animals from abuse and neglect on factory farms. From 11am-2ish, we will be "mucking out the cow shelter, donkey / goat shelter and a spot clean in the barn. It's pitch fork, wheelbarrow work." Following this, we will enjoy a vegan potluck. We have been asked to each bring a vegan dish to share (for 6-8 people).
When: Saturday, Feb. 21st. We've been asked to arrive by 11am. Therefore, we will need to leave Toronto by 9:30am(ish). We will make arrangements for transportation closer to the date once numbers are finalized. We will likely be leaving Stratford around 4pm so we'll be back in Toronto in time for dinner.

Documentary Film Screening: Cowspiracy
What: Are you interested in climate change, sustainability, and food security? If so, come check out the acclaimed documentary, Cowspiracy. Pot, Pigs, and Prostitution: The Harm Principle in the Criminal Law
What: A panel discussion about the role of the harm principle in the criminal law - covering issues like prostitution, marijuana, and animal cruelty.
The panel will features three prominent speakers: Prof. Alan Young, an Osgoode professor who runs the Innocence Project and has led major Charter challenges in Bedford and Malmo-Levine; Prof. Lesli Bisgould, the first animal rights lawyer in Canada and currently working with Legal Aid Ontario; and Angela Chaisson, a criminal defence and civil liberties lawyer at Ruby Shiller Chan Hasan.
This event is being organized in conjunction with the Osgoode Criminal Law Society.

Plus: A free lunch (which also happens to be kosher, halal, and vegan) will be served!

What: ALDF, our parent organization, will be running an online conference with their Executive Director, Stephen Wells. He will be explaining more about ALDF’s cases, campaigns, resources, and ways we can get involved to protect the lives and advance the interest of animals through the legal system. We will gather around a projected computer screen and get a chance to participate with SALDF chapters around North America!
When: Wednesday Oct. 1 at 2-3pm in room 0010B of the Osgoode library.
General Meeting
What: We will be holding a meeting for all members. This will be an opportunity to meet everyone, including the Executive members. It will also be a chance to offer ideas for events for the year. Everyone is strongly encouraged to attend!
